Madalena's Bar

Madalena's Bar is an award-winning wine bar and seafood restaurant at 406 South Terrace in South Fremantle, built around sustainably sourced Western Australian catch and a deep list of natural and boutique wines. It is a touch more polished than the cafes along the strip, but the front alfresco and sidewalk seating keeps it workable with a calm dog.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor alfresco and sidewalk seating on South Terrace. The main dining room and the upstairs bar are people only, so request or book an outdoor table when you plan a visit rather than turning up hoping for a front spot. Keep your dog leashed and settled beside the table; the strip takes steady foot traffic, and the venue gets lively from late afternoon. Bring a water bowl just in case.

The vibe and the menu

The menu moves with what local fishermen land: Shark Bay tiger prawns, raw rock oysters, kingfish or snapper crudo, and Goldband snapper or dhufish off the daily list, alongside non-seafood plates like marinated peppers with goat's curd. The wine list leans minimal-intervention, organic and biodynamic bottles from Australia and France, picked to match the seafood. Hours run Wednesday 5pm to 10pm, Thursday 4pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday noon to midnight and Sunday noon to 9pm, with Monday and Tuesday closed. Book ahead for weekend sittings.

Getting there and parking

South Terrace is the main South Fremantle strip, a short cycle or drive from the Fremantle city centre, with street parking along the terrace and the cross streets. South Beach and its off-lead area are a few blocks west, which turns an early evening booking into a full dog outing.

Close by with the dogs

The South Beach Dog Off Leash Area is the natural pairing before dinner, and the South Beach Cafe covers the daytime version of the same view. On the strip itself, La Cabaña and The Arbor in Fremantle fill out a dog-friendly crawl.
