Bayside Fish Shack

Bayside Fish Shack is a casual fish and chips shop at 9/62 Penguin Road in Safety Bay, a short walk from the foreshore, with a solid local reputation as a genuinely dog-friendly chippy rather than a dog-tolerant one. Order at the counter, take a seat out the front, and the dog settles in with you.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor and undercover seating areas out the front. Keep your dog leashed and close to the table; the frontage sits near the Penguin Road strip, so there is passing foot traffic. Staff are happy to bring a water bowl if you ask, but bowls are not always sitting out by default, so it is worth confirming when you order.

The menu and the vibe

This is restaurant-quality seafood at chippy prices: fresh local snapper grilled, battered or crumbed depending on the day's catch, squid rings, and a run of gluten-free options that has made it a favourite in the coeliac community, with dedicated gluten-free batter and separate cooking procedures for fish, chips and seafood baskets. Dine-in is BYO with no corkage, takeaway runs all day, and there is a kids play area that keeps it family-friendly. Lunch runs 11:30am to 2pm daily and dinner from 4:30pm to 8:30pm, though seasonal closing times can shift slightly earlier in the cooler months.

Getting there and parking

Penguin Road runs off the Safety Bay Road strip, with parking along the shops and side streets. The beach and the foreshore path along Safety Bay are a few minutes' walk away, which makes the classic sequence easy: an on-lead walk along the water first, then fish and chips out the front while the dog dries off.

Close by with the dogs

The Cape Peron Loop Trail is the big coastal walk to pair with lunch, and the Rockingham Fenced Dog Park covers the off-lead option. For other meals out, Catchy Fish and Chips is the other Safety Bay chippy, Pengo's Cafe sits over the water at Shoalwater, and Eight on the Beach is up the coast in Rockingham.
