Cape Peron Loop Trail

A short coastal loop over Tamala limestone headlands at the tip of Point Peron, taking in sheltered coves, wartime ruins and views across Shoalwater Bay to Penguin Island. Trails WA puts it at 2.2 km and AllTrails at 2.6 km, and either way it is under an hour. The condition attached to the trail is unambiguous: dogs stay on lead at all times.

The walk. Class 2 and easy, mostly paved and flat, broken up by a series of steps and a couple of short climbs and drops. It starts and finishes at Cape Peron Car Park East at the end of Point Peron Road. Lookouts and view platforms sit along the way, with a seat at Point John if you want to stop.

The rules. The trail sits in Rockingham Lakes Regional Park inside Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Dogs are on lead for the whole loop. The wider park carries firm exclusions that matter if you explore beyond it: dogs are prohibited in Port Kennedy Scientific Park and in the park wetlands. This is shorebird habitat, so a dog that chases birds does real damage.

Hazards. The limestone cliffs are fragile and prone to instability, so stay on the paved surface and well back from the edges. The wartime bunkers and gun emplacements are interesting and should not be entered. Snakes are active through the warmer months. The trail is genuinely exposed with little to no shade, which on a hot afternoon is the thing most likely to end the walk early.

Water. There are no taps on the trail and no public toilets anywhere in this precinct. The nearest are at the Point Peron boat ramp, which is not walking distance. Carry everything the two of you need.

Getting there. Access is via Point Peron Road, Rockingham, about 45 minutes south of Perth. Trails WA notes there is no public transport to this area, so a car is the practical option. Parking is free at the end of the road, and it fills on sunny weekends.

Nearby with the dogs. Rockingham Fenced Dog Park is the closest enclosed run, with St Clair Reserve Fenced Dog Park south of the cape. Pengo's Cafe is nearest at Shoalwater, and Lu Lu's Cafe and Spill the Beans sit along the Rockingham foreshore. Palm Beach Guest House is the local base.

When to go. Early morning, before the sea breeze gets up and while the paving is cool. Weekdays are quietest; sunny weekend afternoons fill the car parks and crowd the lookout at sunset. Avoid the middle of a summer day entirely, since there is no shade to retreat into. Good for seniors and short walks with a view, less so for dogs that pull.
