Cape Peron Loop Trail

The Cape Peron Loop Trail is a short coastal circuit over Tamala limestone headlands at the tip of Point Peron near Rockingham, taking in sheltered coves, wartime ruins and views across Shoalwater Bay to Penguin Island. Trails WA puts it at 2.2 km and AllTrails at 2.6 km, and either way it is under an hour, with one condition attached: dogs stay on lead at all times.

Leash status

The trail sits in Rockingham Lakes Regional Park, managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, and dogs are on lead for the whole loop. The park's wider rules matter if you explore beyond it: dogs are prohibited in Port Kennedy Scientific Park and in the park's wetlands, which are shorebird habitat where a dog that chases birds does real damage.

The walk

It is graded Class 2 and easy, mostly paved and flat, broken by a series of steps and a couple of short climbs and drops. Lookouts and viewing platforms sit along the way, with a seat at Point John if you want to stop, and the limestone cliffs drop straight into clear water over the coves.

The wartime ruins along the route are part of the draw, but the old bunkers are closed to entry, so treat them as scenery and keep the dog clear of the unstable edges.

Water

There is no reliable dog water on the loop, so carry a bottle and a bowl in the car. The coves look tempting for a swim but the leash rule applies to the water's edge too, so paddle spots are better saved for a designated dog beach.

Hazards

The limestone cliffs are fragile and edges crumble, so keep to the formed path and the lead short near lookouts. Snakes are active through the warmer months, and the coastal sun is unforgiving in summer with little shade on the open headland.

When to go

Early morning is the pick for heat, light and parking, and the loop is pleasant year round in the cooler months. On clear days the views across Shoalwater Bay to Penguin Island are the reward, and seabird traffic is heaviest around the wetland edges.

Getting there and parking

Start and finish at Cape Peron Car Park East at the end of Point Peron Road, about ten minutes south of Rockingham's centre, with no park entry fee. The car park fills on fine weekends, and a mobile coffee van often parks near the entry area.

Close by with the dogs

For an off-lead run afterwards, the Rockingham Fenced Dog Park is the closest secure option, and Warnbro Dog Beach down the coast gives the dog a proper swim. Pengo's Cafe at Shoalwater is the natural coffee stop on the drive back.
