Hobby Lane

Hobby Lane is a rustic-style cafe at Shop 4, 43 Blackwood Street in Mitchelton, tucked into the laneway that gives it its name. It pours Bear Bones coffee and plates up all-day brunch, and the leafy courtyard out front is dog territory, on a street that has become one of Brisbane's northside best strips for bringing the dog to breakfast.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor courtyard seating in the laneway, leashed and settled beside the table. Water bowls are generally on hand for dogs passing through, though bringing your own is the safe play on busy weekends. The indoor room stays for humans only, which is the norm on this strip, and the laneway is covered enough to take the edge off the morning sun.

Max: mornings before 8am are the quiet window. The laneway fills fast on Saturdays once the Blackwood Street crowd arrives.

The vibe

Hours run 6:15am to 1pm daily, so this is a breakfast and lunch venue rather than dinner. The menu leans hearty brunch: corn fritters, eggs benedict, a morning burger and mushroom toasties, with house-made cakes, cinnamon scrolls and crumpets in the cabinet. Service is the other thing regulars mention, with staff who remember both the coffee order and the dog's name.

Getting there and parking

Blackwood Street runs through the Mitchelton village, close to Mitchelton train station, with street parking on the surrounding blocks that tightens up on weekend mornings. Footpath dining sits back from the road, so the tables are workable even for dogs still learning café manners.
