The Commons Collective

The kitchen runs Thursday to Saturday from midday to 10pm and Sunday from midday to 5pm, closing Monday to Wednesday, so plan the visit around a Thursday to Sunday window. Dogs settle into the open-air outdoor spaces, including the Rosé Garden and the courtyard side of the precinct, with water bowls on hand and a dedicated pooch menu covering dog-safe snacks and puppacinos so nobody just watches the other eat.

The dog setup

The precinct runs practical touches that make outdoor dining with a dog easy: puppy parking if you need hands free for a minute, doggy daybeds under the outdoor tables, and staff used to the leashed-dog-at-the-garden-table routine. The outdoor areas open to the weather, so a hot afternoon or a cold one changes the comfort level; book or arrive early for the shadier tables in summer. Keep the lead short through the precinct walkways, because the shared spaces carry prams, drinks and other dogs.

Max: pooch menus are good, but the test is whether staff bring water without being asked. This one passes. Still keep the lead clipped, garden or not.

Off the table and into the park

Fawkner Park is a few minutes up St Kilda Road and runs 24-hour off-leash across the western and southern lawn sections, with the playground and ovals strictly on-leash or out of bounds; informal dog meetups build most weekday afternoons about an hour before sunset. Como Park adds a river-side run closer to South Yarra, and Dogs Bar in St Kilda is a currently trading dinner stop worth a call about outdoor tables.
