Mad Apple Café

Mad Apple is a sunny, fully vegetarian and vegan cafe at 122 St John Street in the heart of the Launceston CBD, and it is one of the city's most reliable dog stops. Bring yours to the outdoor tables and the team will happily knock up a puppuccino while you work through a plant-based breakfast or lunch menu.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating on St John Street, which is the natural choice while you eat. As a food venue, dogs stay outside rather than in. Staff are well practised with canine guests; regulars report dog beds and water bowls appearing at the table, and the puppuccinos come out with enthusiasm. Still, pack a travel bowl for warm days, and aim for a table with room for your dog to settle out of the foot traffic.

The menu

The kitchen is 100 percent vegetarian with plenty of vegan options, and a lot of the produce comes from their own Mad Apple Garden. The all-day list runs from tofu scramble and smashed avocado to laksa and nasi goreng, with gluten-free choices across the menu. It is a daytime venue, open seven days from 8am to about 4pm.

Getting there and parking

St John Street runs through the centre of town, and street parking nearby is limited, so the city car parks a block or two away are the dependable option. It is an easy walk from most of the CBD, and mornings outside the brunch peak are the sweet spot for an outdoor table with space for the dog.

For a second stop, the barista bench at Valley Coffee sits in the old stables up the street, the water's edge is covered by The Boatyard, and The Devil's Own Ice Creamery handles dessert. Cataract Gorge, a short drive away, does leashed walking on a bigger scale.
