Valley Coffee is a small Melbourne-style laneway cafe off Paterson Street, roasting its own beans and opening early. It is a favourite with local dog walkers, with dogs welcome in the laneway seating out front.

The dog setup. Dogs settle in the outdoor laneway area, milk-crate seating and small tables tucked off the main street, which makes for a secure, pedestrian-friendly spot away from traffic. It suits a well-behaved dog that can sit close to you at a compact table. Bring your own water bowl.

Good to know. The draw is the house-roasted Paperboy blend, plus reuben sandwiches, bowls and pastries, and fast friendly service. Early opening (from around 6am) makes it ideal after a morning walk.

Getting there. Address is on Paterson Street near the corner of St John Street, in the laneway. Street parking on Paterson Street is available but can be busy; the spot is very walkable within the city.

Nearby with the dogs. Queens Park is a short walk away for a post-coffee run, and City Park is also close for a longer stroll.

When to go. Early mornings are the natural fit, with the laneway quiet and the coffee fresh. Off-peak gives the dog more room in the compact space.
