Valley Coffee

Valley Coffee is a small Melbourne-style laneway cafe off Paterson Street in central Launceston, roasting its own beans and opening from 6am on weekdays. It is a favourite with local dog walkers, with dogs welcome in the laneway seating out front.

The dog setup

Dogs settle in the outdoor laneway area, milk-crate seating and small tables tucked off the main street, which makes for a secure, pedestrian-friendly spot away from traffic. It suits a well-behaved dog that can sit close to you at a compact table, and early mornings give everyone the most room. Bring your own water bowl.

Worth knowing

The draw is the house-roasted Paperboy blend plus reuben sandwiches, toasties, bowls and pastries, with fast, friendly service and a small crew who get to know the regulars. Early opening makes it ideal after a morning walk, and it trades weekdays to 1pm and Saturdays to midday, closing Sundays.

Pepsi: laneway, flat white, reuben, dog asleep at your feet. Launceston mornings do not get much better than this.

Getting there

The cafe sits in a laneway off Paterson Street near the corner of St John Street. Street parking on Paterson Street is available but busy, and the spot is very walkable within the city, so many regulars arrive on foot with the dog already tired from a walk.

While you're out there

Queens Park and City Park are both a short walk away for a post-coffee stroll, and the Hoblers Bridge Reserve Fenced Dog Park at Newstead gives the dog a proper off-leash run. M&B Cafe and Smoothie Bar is another city option with outdoor seating.
