Three Steps On George

Three Steps on George is a historic corner pub on the George and Elizabeth Street corner at 158 George Street, doing British-style pub fare in one of Launceston's older buildings. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor beer garden and courtyard, which has its own gate straight off George Street.

The dog setup

Dogs join you in the outdoor beer garden and courtyard, not in the bar or dining room. The garden's own street gate is the handy part: you can slip a dog straight in off the footpath without weaving through the interior. Bring your own water bowl, and if you are coming at a quieter time, ring ahead to confirm the garden is open and set up, because the outdoor area is not always staffed the same way every session.

The vibe and the menu

The kitchen leans classic British, with dishes like venison pie, lamb shoulder and steak alongside locally sourced ingredients. Inside there is a log fire and old-world charm, while the garden out the back carries the warmer months. It trades evenings, from about 5pm on weeknights and earlier on Fridays, and closes Sundays.

Getting there and parking

The corner of George and Elizabeth Streets is walkable from most of the Launceston CBD, with street parking on both streets if you are driving in. Mild afternoons and evenings are when the garden works best, so an early dinner slot is the reliable pick with a dog.

City Park and the Tamar riverfront paths are a short walk for a pre or post-dinner stroll. For another sit-down stop, the alfresco terraces at Rupert & Hound run along the Seaport, Tidal Cafe covers the daytime coffee shift, and Pachinko is the modern counterpoint a few blocks over.
