The short version. Yard Doggs on Martin Street is one of the genuinely dog-welcoming spots in Fortitude Valley, an American-style bar and wings joint where dogs come inside and out. The name is not a bluff: the staff are used to four-legged regulars and water bowls are usually on hand.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor beer garden and can also come inside to mingle, which is unusual for the precinct. Keep yours leashed and settled at your table; the space gets busy and loud on wings nights. Bring your own water bowl as backup in case they are all in use.

Good to know. The kitchen is built around American comfort food, chicken wings (including a fierce "death sentence" heat option), chilli dogs, onion rings and sweet potato fries, with a solid beer and cocktail list. It runs hot and social rather than quiet, so it suits confident dogs over nervous ones.

Getting there. It sits in the heart of the Valley, a short walk from Fortitude Valley train station. Street parking in the surrounding blocks is limited and turns over slowly on weekends, so transit or a rideshare is the easier call.

Make a day of it. Walk it off afterwards along the riverfront paths at nearby Howard Smith Wharves, or head to New Farm Park for a proper off-leash run.

When to go. Earlier in the evening or a weekend afternoon is calmer for a dog than the late-night crush. Good for social dogs who are happy in a busy crowd.
