Gardener’s Lodge Cafe

Gardener's Lodge Cafe occupies a heritage sandstone lodge inside Victoria Park, Camperdown, at the corner of Parramatta Road and City Road. It is an Italian-inspired brunch and lunch spot: the kitchen is known for its khachapuri, lamb shank, lasagne and a well-regarded vegan selection, and it opens 8:30am to 5pm every day. The park setting is the drawcard, and dogs slot neatly into it.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor, patio-style seating under the trees, on a lead, with the park lawn in view. Indoor seating follows the usual NSW food-service rule and is not available to dogs. The cafe is reported to keep treats on hand for canine visitors, but bring your own water bowl to be safe. Weekend mornings fill fast, so weekday visits are the easiest way to land an outdoor table with a dog in tow.

Worth knowing

The park rules matter here. Under the City of Sydney's Victoria Park listing, dogs are off leash daily between 6pm and 8am only; between 8am and 6pm, when the cafe trades its busiest hours, dogs must be on a leash. Dogs are prohibited around the Victoria Park pool, the Lake Northam pond, playgrounds and barbecue areas at all times, so plan the lake loop for early morning or evening.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits inside Victoria Park at Parramatta Road and City Road, Camperdown 2050. Street parking on City Road is limited and there is paid parking near the University of Sydney grounds. It is an easy walk from Glebe and Newtown via the park pathways, and close to Broadway for anyone coming in from the city.

Make a day of it

Victoria Park itself is the main event, with open lawns and paths right outside the cafe door for a proper walk either side of breakfast. If you want a fully fenced run instead, Mona off leash dog park is nearby at Chippendale, and Enmore Fenced Dog Park is a few minutes further.
