Port Admiral Hotel

The Port Admiral is a restored 1849 hotel on Commercial Road and one of the oldest buildings still standing in Port Adelaide, and its beer garden is the standing pick for a pub lunch with a dog in the heritage precinct.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome across the outdoor areas: the large shaded beer garden, the footpath tables out front and the upstairs balcony. They stay out of the dining rooms inside, on lead and under your supervision the whole time.

Staff are used to four-legged regulars and usually bring a water bowl out unprompted, and the pub keeps a dedicated dog menu by the door with treats for well-behaved visitors.

The vibe

Inside it is a proper gastropub: a rotating craft beer list, a curated wine selection and pub classics built around South Australian produce, from the chicken schnitzel to gluten-free and vegan plates. The 1849 facade and heritage interior are half the reason people come.

Doors open at 11:30am daily, trading to 10pm Friday and Saturday and winding up earlier on Sunday, so a weekday lunch or an early weekend table is the calm window before the garden fills.

Max: the beer garden fills up fast on weekend afternoons, so get there early if you want a shaded table with room for a dog to settle.

Getting there and parking

The hotel sits at 55 Commercial Road, about 20 minutes northwest of the Adelaide CBD by car. Street parking runs along Commercial Road and the side streets, public car parks sit near the SA Maritime Museum, and the pub is a short walk from Port Adelaide railway station.

While you're out there

Hart's Mill and the Port River waterfront are five minutes away on foot, with open grass and paved paths for a pre-lunch stretch and a fair chance of spotting the resident dolphins from the bank. For a fenced run before you eat, Exeter Fenced Dog Park is a few minutes' drive across the bridge.
