Swedish Tarts

Swedish Tarts is a Scandinavian-inspired cafe at 40 Semaphore Road, and the draw is exactly what the name suggests: tarts, cardamom and cinnamon pastries and proper Swedish baking, backed by beef pies with traditional butter pastry and well-rated coffee. Dogs are welcome at the footpath tables out front, making it an easy pastry-and-coffee stop minutes from the beach.

The dog setup

Dogs join you at the outdoor pavement seating on Semaphore Road, while the indoor area stays people-only in line with South Australian health rules. Staff are known to be dog-friendly and the cafe sometimes has dog biscuits on hand, but bring your own travel water bowl, since bowls are not permanently set out at every table. Shade at the front can be thin early in the day, so time it for the morning or be ready to move into the sun's path on a warm afternoon.

Max: the dog biscuits show up sometimes, but plan on the pastry being for you. Bring a water bowl and stake out a shaded table before the strip gets busy.

Worth knowing

Beyond the baking, the menu covers an all-day breakfast and brunch crowd: smashed avo, mushroom quiche, a haloumi burger and corn fritters with chorizo, with iced strawberry matcha and freshly squeezed juices on the drinks side. It opens 7am to 3pm on weekdays and 7am to 4pm on weekends, and weekend mornings are the busiest windows.

Getting there and parking

On-street parking sits directly on Semaphore Road with more in the side streets, though weekends get busy along the strip. The old Semaphore train station area and local buses are within easy reach if you would rather walk in with the dog.

Close by with the dogs

Semaphore Beach and the foreshore walking paths are a short stroll away, so a pastry here pairs naturally with an oceanside walk; check council signage for current on-leash and dog-hour rules before heading onto the sand. For a secure run, the Semapaw Park fenced dog park is close, and for more coffee, Heart of is up the same strip and Ink Espresso is just south at Largs Bay.
