Heart of Semaphore

Heart of Semaphore is a homely community cafe at 103 Semaphore Road, run with a quirky, family feel and a reputation for scones, solid brunch and a strong spread of vegetarian and vegan options. Dogs join you in the undercover outdoor seating on the corner of Penny Street and Semaphore Road, which is the table to aim for in any weather.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor area, not the main dining room, in line with the usual SA rules for food premises. The covered corner seating gives you shade in summer and shelter when the sea breeze picks up, and water is often available for dogs. There is a kids play area too, so expect a family buzz rather than a quiet room.

Max: the corner tables are worth waiting for on a hot day. If they are taken, the footpath strip along Semaphore Road still works for a settled dog.

The vibe

Freshly baked scones are the signature, with coffee-and-scone deals running often, and the brunch menu runs from big breakfasts to pancakes and breakfast bagels. Trading hours vary between listings and the cafe has had ownership changes recently, so check ahead if you are making a special trip; it generally trades mornings to early afternoon Tuesday through Sunday and closes Mondays.

Free street parking runs along Semaphore Road and the residential side streets, and entry and the outdoor seating are wheelchair accessible.

Close by with the dogs

Semaphore Beach and the foreshore are a few minutes on foot for an ocean-side walk, with seasonal off-lead rules that tighten during daylight savings, so check the council signage before unclipping. For a guaranteed off-lead run, Semapaw Park Fenced Dog Park is fully fenced with separate zones. For another dog-friendly coffee on this stretch, Ink Espresso in Largs Bay and The Cabin in Exeter are both close by.
