Strange Company

Strange Company is a stylish small bar in Fremantle's historic West End, built around craft beer, natural wine and proper cocktails with share plates that punch well above typical bar fare. For dogs it is a footpath affair: a handful of front tables on Nairn Street, good for a relaxed afternoon drink rather than a long session.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables on the front footpath, not inside the bar. The sidewalk seating is on the narrow side but makes a fine people-watching perch, and staff are accommodating with dogs on lead. Bring your own collapsible bowl, as water is not laid on automatically.

The vibe

The room is small and the emphasis is on an inventive cocktail list, a strong wine selection and live music and jazz sessions. Hours run from 4pm Monday to Thursday, from midday Friday to Sunday, with midnight closes on the weekend. Late afternoon on a weekday is the calmest window for the footpath tables; weekends fill quickly given the limited outdoor seating, so come early if you want room for the lead.

Getting there and parking

Find it at 10 Nairn Street, a short walk from Fremantle station through the West End. Nearby street parking is pay-and-display and limited; the Esplanade Reserve car parks are an easy walk away.

Close by with the dogs

The Esplanade Reserve gives you green space for an on-lead wander, and Bathers Beach is walkable, though parts of the beach next to dining operations are dog-prohibited per City of Fremantle rules. For an actual off-lead run, the South Beach off-leash area is a short drive south. Plenty of West End venues take dogs at their outdoor tables; Clancy's Fish Pub and The Arbor are other dog-friendly pub stops in Freo.
