The Australian Heritage Hotel

The Australian Heritage Hotel is a sandstone corner pub on Cumberland Street dating to 1824, one of Sydney's oldest, and it is genuinely relaxed about dogs: per the pub's own FAQ, well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome across all areas, inside the historic main bar as well as at the footpath tables out front. Staff bring out water bowls on request. For a city pub, that is as good as dog policy gets.

The dog setup

Keep your dog on a lead, calm and close, because the footpath tables sit right on Cumberland Street with steady foot traffic past them all day. The main bar is a working heritage room with stone floors and a busy crowd, so it suits a settled dog more than a nervous one. Weekday afternoons are the calm window; Friday and Saturday nights are loud and packed.

Worth knowing

The kitchen is known for native-meat pizzas, kangaroo, crocodile and emu among them, alongside a large rotating list of Australian craft beer. The beer list and the heritage room are the draw; the food is classic pub fare done at scale. Go for the atmosphere and a genuinely dog-tolerant bar, not for a quiet meal.

Max: the footpath tables are right on the street. Keep the lead short, it is a working corner, not a courtyard.

Getting there and parking

The pub is at 100 Cumberland Street, The Rocks, an easy walk from the Circular Quay train, ferry and bus interchange. Street parking nearby is metered and scarce; paid parking stations on Harrington Street and Bond Street are the fallback. Public transport is the sane option.

Close by with the dogs

The Rocks' cobblestone laneways make an easy on-lead wander before or after, and the Writers Walk along the harbour foreshore starts nearby for harbour views with the dog. Munn Reserve in Millers Point is a short walk for a patch of grass. If you are staying over, Four Seasons Hotel Sydney and Pier One Sydney Harbour both take dogs.
