Dog Swamp Reserve

Dog Swamp Reserve is a small wetland reserve beside Wanneroo Road in Yokine, and the name is a trap: it commemorates dingoes, not dog exercise. This is an on-leash waterbird lake for a quiet lap, not an off-leash run, and it is one of the more peaceful walking spots in the area if you take it on those terms.

The rules

Dogs must stay on-leash throughout. The City of Stirling lists Dog Swamp as a leash-required reserve and there is clear signage at both entrances, there to protect the wetland's resident birdlife. Keep dogs out of the water and give the birds room at the water's edge, because this is a managed conservation wetland and stormwater basin.

The water and terrain

Flat paths loop the landscaped lake past lawns and native vegetation, and peaceful is the word visitors reach for most. It is a short circuit rather than a workout, which is exactly the point for a calm sniff walk with a lead-mannered dog.

The name

The area was recorded as Native Dog Swamp by 1870, most likely for the dingoes that frequented it. Its Noongar name is Beebeenup, meaning hollow between two rises, and it served as a camp and landmark for travellers heading north before being reshaped into a managed lake in the 1960s.

Getting there

The reserve sits beside the Dog Swamp Shopping Centre, with parking off the Wanneroo Road access points. Buses along Wanneroo Road stop within a short walk.

Max: the birdlife is the whole point of this place. Keep the lead short near the water and skip the ball throwing, because there are better spots for that up the road.

Close by with the dogs

For an actual off-leash session, the Dianella Fenced Dog Park is about ten minutes away and Yokine Regional Open Space on Wordsworth Avenue has designated off-leash areas. Coffee after: Mid-Century Cafe and Collectables is five minutes away, or Muzz Buzz does drive-through with free dog biscuits.

When to go

Weekday mornings are quietest, before the shopping centre traffic builds. Good for older dogs, lead-manners practice and anyone who wants ten calm minutes rather than a workout.
