Bark Park(Wynyard)

Bark Park is Waratah-Wynyard Council's purpose-built off-leash dog park on the Wynyard Show Ground, at the corner of Jackson Street and Jenner Street. It is fully fenced with double-gate entries at both access points, so dogs can be let off the lead the moment they are through the second gate and there is no acrobatic leash swap at the door.

What the park provides

The council has kitted the space out beyond the basics: a water station for drinking, a splash pool for hot days, a poo bag dispenser at the gate and a community toy box that regulars keep stocked. The fully fenced boundary means even quick dogs can burn off pace without an owner watching the fence line, and the flat show-ground surface suits older dogs who still want to socialise without hard running.

Council rules

As a designated council off-leash area, the park's rules come from Waratah-Wynyard Council rather than the venue itself. Dogs must be kept under effective control at all times, waste must be collected and binned, and owners remain responsible for their dog's behaviour around others. The double gates exist for a reason: close the first gate before opening the second, and keep dogs on lead until you are fully inside.

Planning a session

The splash pool and water station earn their keep through summer, while the open ground drains well enough after rain for a winter run. Mornings and late afternoons are when the regulars tend to gather, so dogs looking for a playmate are best off visiting at those times. Bring your own spare bag as a backup, because the dispenser runs empty now and then. The community toy box is a nice touch, though it is worth a quick check that a toy is clean before handing it over.

Wynyard itself makes an easy add-on to a visit: Lemon Tree Providore does coffee and provisions, The Vault handles a sit-down lunch, and dogs can stay with you at Wynyard Showgrounds if you are travelling through the north-west coast with a camper in tow.

Check the council's website for any temporary closures around show-ground events, and give the splash pool a miss if your dog is not confident around water.
