Kedron Brook Floodway Off-Leash Area (Wooloowin)

The Kedron Brook Floodway Off-Leash Area at Wooloowin is a thin off-leash strip along the brook serving Wooloowin and the Gordon Park end of Brisbane's inner north. It is largely unfenced open parkland with creek access, so the draw is a flat run and a paddle in the water rather than enclosed safety. If your dog needs a fully fenced space, this is not the venue for it.

Leash status

This is a designated Brisbane City Council off-leash area, but the standard conditions apply: your dog stays under effective control at all times, you carry a leash, and dogs that do not come back on the first call should stay on lead given the unfenced edges, shared cycle paths and waterway. Dogs must not menace, attack or worry people or other animals, need to stay out of playground areas, and should wear a collar and registration tag. Bag and bin your dog's waste using the bins along the path.

Max: the floodway lives up to its name. After heavy rain the brook rises quickly and the whole strip can go under, so check conditions before you head out.

Water and terrain

The terrain is flat grassy parkland following the brook, with access points near Montrose Street and Thistle Street towards Gordon Park and creek access along the whole strip for a paddle. Shade is scarce along the open floodway, so bring your own if your dog needs a break from the sun. Water quality is worth a look after storms before letting your dog swim.

Getting there and parking

Parking at the access points is limited to street spots, so arrive early on weekends. Bus stops on Stafford Road and Lutwyche Road serve the area, and Wooloowin station is a reasonable walk away for locals coming without a car.

When to go

Weekday mornings from about 6 to 8am are the quiet window. Evenings from 5 to 7pm and Sunday afternoons draw the biggest, most social crowds, which suits dogs who like company and does not suit those who do not.

For a fenced alternative, Kalinga Park Fenced Dog Park is minutes away in Clayfield, and Kedron Brook Off Lead Dog Park covers the Montgomery Street stretch of the same corridor. After a morning run, Wandering Bull Espresso is a solid dog-friendly coffee stop.
