Geelong Road Dog Off Leash Area

The Geelong Road Dog Off Leash Area is a linear reserve running along the northern side of Geelong Road in Werribee, better thought of as a walking route with off-leash rights than a social dog park. A wide paved path makes it a clean option for laps through the wetter months, and the thin grassy strip dotted with trees gives dogs something to sniff along the way.

The dog setup

The reserve is unfenced and informal, so this only suits dogs with reliable recall. Wyndham City Council rules apply: carry a leash at all times, keep your dog in sight and under effective voice control, and recall immediately whenever other people or dogs approach. Leash up within 20 metres of any play equipment, barbecues or picnic facilities, and keep dogs out of local waterways. There is an active oil pipeline under the reserve, so digging is prohibited. Declared menacing, dangerous and restricted-breed dogs are not allowed off-leash. Water stations sit on-site with benches along the path; there are no public toilets, so bring your own bags and clean up.

Max: Traffic noise from Geelong Road is constant. If your dog spooks at trucks, this is a conditioning walk, not a relaxing one.

Getting there

The reserve runs along the northern side of Geelong Road between the two Westleigh Drive intersections. Parking is along Westleigh Drive, and driving is the practical option, though Werribee Station is roughly a 15 to 20 minute walk away for anyone arriving by train.

Make a day of it

If you would rather have a fence between your dog and the road, the Presidents Park Fenced Dog Park at Wyndham Vale and the Diversion Weir Dog Off Leash Area on the Werribee River are the closest alternatives. After the walk, The Garden Feast Nursery Cafe on Railway Avenue is famously accommodating, with a garden terrace, house-made dog biscuits and puppacinos, and Wolf on Watton keeps outdoor seating on Werribee's main strip.
