Lake Monger Dog Park

Lake Monger Dog Park, officially the Galup Dog Exercise Area, is a large off-leash zone on the southern side of Lake Monger Drive in Wembley, right on the edge of the lake. It is one of the busiest social hubs for local dog owners in the area, with open grassy space, mature shade trees and lake views, and it suits active dogs that want real room to run.

The rules: The exercise area is fenced along Lake Monger Drive but is not fully enclosed on every side, so dogs need to be under effective control at all times, not just off-leash confidence. Carry a lead even though the zone is off-leash, since it is required for the walk in and out and for the areas bordering the lake. Dogs are not permitted on the adjoining children's playgrounds or the active sports grounds around the main park. Picking up after your dog is mandatory and bags are supplied on site.

What's there: Entry is via a double-gated system, which makes for a safer exit if your dog tends to bolt. There are drinking fountains with dog bowls, benches in the shade, sealed footpaths connecting to the broader Lake Monger circuit, and lighting for early or late walks.

Getting there: The park sits on Kimberley St, West Leederville, bordering Lake Monger Drive. Free parking runs along Lake Monger Drive next to the exercise area, and it's a short walk from West Leederville train station or the Gregory Street bus routes. The path network is wheelchair accessible.

Watch-outs: Expect mud through winter, and expect company: the park is busiest on weekdays from 7am to 8.30am and 4.30pm to 6pm, plus weekend mornings. Great for a social dog, but a timid one may prefer an off-peak visit.
