Lake Monger Dog Park

The Lake Monger Dog Park, officially the Galup Dog Exercise Area, is a large off-leash zone on the southern side of Lake Monger Drive in Wembley, right on the lake edge. It is one of the inner west's busiest dog social hubs, with open grass, mature shade trees and water views.

The dog setup

Understand the fencing before you rely on it: the fence along Lake Monger Drive is a road-safety barrier, not a full enclosure, and the zone is not sealed on every side. The Town of Cambridge requires dogs under safe and effective control at all times, so this is a ground for recall-trained dogs rather than bolters. Entry runs through a double gate, which helps at arrival and departure.

Carry a lead for the walk in and out and for the rest of the reserve, where everything outside this zone is on lead. Playgrounds and active sports grounds around the lake are off limits to dogs. Waste bag dispensers and bins are on site, and picking up is mandatory.

Worth knowing

Amenities are good by dog park standards: a drinking fountain with a dog bowl, bench seating in the shade, sealed footpaths connecting to the wider lake circuit, and lighting for early or late walks. Lake Monger is a waterbird sanctuary, so a dog that chases swans will end a walk fast. Expect mud through winter and expect company: peak times run 7am to 8.30am and 4.30pm to 6pm on weekdays, plus weekend mornings.

The zone suits a social dog; a timid one will do better at off-peak times or on the on-lead circuit path around the lake itself, where you still get the waterbirds and the views without the crowd. Locals use the combination as a routine: a couple of laps of the circuit on lead, then time in the exercise area.

Getting there and parking

The exercise area sits off Lake Monger Drive near the West Leederville end, with free parking along the drive beside the zone. West Leederville train station is a short walk away, and the path network is wheelchair accessible.

Close by with the dogs

Piccolo's Corner in West Leederville suits the coffee stop, and the Wembley Hotel has a dog-friendly courtyard on Cambridge Street for something bigger.
