Perry Lakes Dog Exercise Area is a spacious off-leash section of Perry Lakes Reserve in Floreat, with open grass, shade trees and lake access that make it a firm favourite with local dog owners.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash in the designated exercise area, but you need to be capable of controlling your dog and keep it in sight at all times. Bins and red waste bags are provided, so there's no excuse for leaving it behind. Dogs shouldn't be allowed to chase or harass waterbirds or other wildlife around the lakes.

What's there. The reserve has toilets, barbecues, picnic tables and a gazebo for shelter, plus ample free parking including accessible bays and lighting for early or late visits. The exercise area sits next to a skate park and playground, so keep dogs under control if you're near those.

Watch-outs. Snakes are occasionally reported near the skate park end in warmer months, so stick to open paths and keep an eye on long grass in summer.

Getting there. The reserve is on Perry Lakes Drive, easily reached from Oceanic Drive or Brookdale Street, with local bus routes running along Oceanic Drive and Floreat Forum a short walk from the entrance.

the lake water is the best part, a proper paddle and drink after a hard run around the grass.

Nearby with the dogs. Cup & Co Floreat is a few minutes away for a coffee once you're both worn out.

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are quietest; weekend mornings and the after-work window around 5 to 6:30pm draw the biggest crowds.
