Colman Park Dog Off Leash Area is a quiet sports oval on Croydon Road in Warrandyte South, ringed by gum and pine bushland. It's the pick for dogs that want space and a bit of solitude rather than a crowded, high-traffic dog park.

The rules. Dogs can run off-lead here, but only when there's no organised sport on the oval. Keep dogs on-lead within 15 metres of the playground, barbecue area or any active sporting event, and make sure your dog has solid voice control, since the oval fencing is partial and opens onto surrounding streets and bush.

What's there. The oval has a pavilion, a small playground and on-site barbecues. There's no public water tap for dogs (the pavilion taps are locked), so bring your own water and a bowl.

Getting there. It's at 76 Croydon Road, reached off Ringwood-Warrandyte Road, with a gravel car park right beside the oval. Public transport doesn't really reach this spot, so plan to drive.

Weekend mornings bring the local cricket or football crowd in season, so if you want the oval to yourselves, aim for a weekday or a quieter afternoon. If it's busy, the bush trails around the perimeter are usually empty.
