Warrandyte Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Warrandyte Reserve covers the bushland and river frontage along Yarra Street in Warrandyte, where shaded unsealed tracks run beside the Yarra and the township's main bridge marks the eastern gateway. Most of it is off-lead under effective control, which makes this one of Manningham's everyday dog walking reserves rather than a mown suburban oval.

The rules

Manningham City Council keeps most of the reserve off-lead, but the exceptions matter. Leash up for a 260-metre section between 183 Yarra Street and the Kangaroo Ground-Warrandyte Road bridge, and within 15 metres of playgrounds, BBQ areas or organised events. Dogs are not permitted in the fenced wonguim wilam playspace at all. Carry bags and use the bins; fines apply. Check the on-site signage for current boundaries, because Manningham has adjusted lead areas in this reserve before.

The setup

Nothing formal: unsealed riverside tracks, picnic and BBQ spots, bins and pockets of parking along Yarra Street. No fencing, so control is the leash that counts. The Yarra offers shallow edges where dogs swim, but currents run stronger after rain, and the river bank is uneven enough to deserve a watchful eye.

Max: the water is the whole point in summer, but I get clipped on near the bridge and the playground before I earn my swim. Fair trade.

Getting there

Set along Yarra Street next to the Warrandyte Bridge, with free street parking in pockets along the reserve. Buses connect the township from Ringwood and Eltham if you are arriving without a car.

Close by with the dogs

The Warrandyte River Reserve off-lead area continues the riverside network, and the Lynette Reserve off-lead area is the suburban alternative. For coffee, Now and Not Yet in the township is the local dog-friendly stop.

When to go

Sunny weekends, public holidays and market days fill the reserve with non-dog traffic, which means tighter lead discipline near the bridge and picnic areas. Weekday mornings and late afternoons are calmer for timid dogs, and summer evenings end with a swim in the shallows.
