Leo Dineen Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is an open grassed park on Spring Street, Tullamarine, a few minutes from Melbourne Airport. It is a quiet neighbourhood off-leash spot with room to run, home ground to the local football and cricket clubs, and none of the crowding you get at the bigger suburban dog parks.

The dog setup

The reserve is unfenced, so dogs need reliable recall and you need to keep visual contact and voice or hand control throughout. Hume City Council's leash rules apply at the edges: dogs must be on lead in the car park, within 10 metres of shared paths and BBQ areas, and within 50 metres of any playspace. The open middle is all grass and suits fetch or a frisbee session. Waste bins sit around the park, benches cover the owners, and the tap water can be unreliable, so carry your own bottle and a travel bowl.

The vibe

Early mornings before 9am and late afternoons after 4:30pm are the busy windows as locals fit a walk around work, while mid-morning and early afternoon stay calm. On weekends, junior sport can take over parts of the reserve, so check the ground in use before letting your dog range wide. Minimal shade or shelter is the one real drawback to plan around.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at 52 Spring Street, a short drive off the Tullamarine Freeway or the Western Ring Road, with off-street parking generally available close to the ground. It is best reached by car; buses run via Melrose Drive but no route goes directly past the park.

Make a day of it

Trade Park Reserve on Melrose Drive is the other Tullamarine off-leash strip a few hundred metres north. For a fenced option, Elmhurst Park fenced dog park and Ginifer Reserve are both short drives into Gladstone Park. The Ninth Ave at Westmeadows works for the coffee leg on the way home.
