Atkin Park in Tugun has a signed off-leash dog exercise area on Station Street, a quick walk from the village centre.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash only inside the signed exercise area, and must be leashed again before you leave it. You need to keep effective voice control at all times, and handlers must be 17 or older and present with the dog throughout. Pick up after your dog, and dogs are not permitted in the adjoining children's playground.

What's there. A large open grass area, some shade trees, waste bins and accessible parking. Some visitors have noted the exercise area is not fully fenced, so it suits dogs with solid recall rather than bolters.

Getting there. On Station Street, reachable via the Gold Coast Highway or Stewart Road, with on-street parking. It is close enough to walk from central Tugun and nearby Translink bus stops run along the Gold Coast Highway.

Nearby with the dogs. Tugun's cafe strip is a short walk away, with several venues welcoming leashed dogs outdoors, and there is pet-friendly accommodation around the beachfront.

Because the fencing isn't complete, keep new or nervous dogs on a long line until you know how reliable their recall is here.

Weekday mornings and Saturday evenings tend to be quieter than the Saturday midday rush, so aim for those if your dog prefers fewer playmates.
