Palm Beach Dog Off-Leash Beach

At the northern end of Palm Beach by Tallebudgera Creek, this off-leash stretch pairs calm, shallow creek water with open ocean. The creek end is ideal for nervous dogs and puppies; the ocean side is for the confident swimmers.

The rules. Off-leash 24/7, but your dog must stay under effective voice control the whole time. Keep out of the protected sand dunes and stay 200 metres clear of any flagged bathing areas. Dogs need a collar with a current registration tag, and they're not allowed in the fenced children's playground in Palm Beach Parklands.

The water and terrain. Sheltered Tallebudgera Creek water on one side, livelier ocean on the other. It's best at mid-to-low tide, when there's the most beach; high tide cuts the area back noticeably.

What's there. A car park off Jefferson Lane and Papi Terrace, with toilets, showers and dog fountains near the parklands entrance. Behind the sand there's open green space, shade trees, picnic tables and BBQs, and the Dune Café at the park entrance is dog-friendly.

Getting there. By car, take the Gold Coast Highway and turn onto Tomewin Street for parking near the creek. Translink buses (routes 700 and 777) stop along the highway, and the beach sits on the coastal path between Burleigh Heads and Currumbin.

Watch-outs. There are migratory birds and other wildlife in the creek-side sand. Keep your dog from chasing them.

When to go. Early mornings (before 8am) or late afternoons (after 4pm) for fewer crowds and cooler sand, at mid-to-low tide. Good for mixed groups: the calm creek for the timid, the ocean for the keen.
