Melaleuca Dog Park is a large, open off-leash area set within the Mallawa Drive sports complex off Nineteenth Avenue in Palm Beach. It is a big grassed run for high-energy dogs, with one important catch: it is not fenced.

The rules. The off-leash area is open at all times except when sport is on, when the soccer fields and netball courts are strictly off-limits to dogs. Because the space runs alongside and through active sports grounds and has no fence, your dog needs reliable recall and must stay under effective voice control. Pick up after your dog; bag dispensers are around but it pays to carry your own.

What's there. Wide grassed areas with some shade trees, depending on the section. Seating is sparse out on the open fields. There is no reliable dog water on-site, so bring your own.

Getting there. Off the Gold Coast Highway, turn onto Nineteenth Avenue and into Melaleuca Drive. There is ample free street parking along Melaleuca Drive. Local bus routes run along the highway and nearby streets, leaving a short walk in.

When to go. Mid-morning on weekdays or early afternoon on weekends is quietest. Dawn and late afternoon are popular with locals, and weekend mornings bring crowds plus junior sport, so avoid those if your dog is easily distracted.
