Thornleigh Dog Park

A fully fenced, 24/7 off-leash park on Dawson Avenue in Thornleigh, bordered by bushland, with a long rectangular layout that suits dogs who want to run in straight lines rather than circle a small yard.

The rules. Fully fenced with a secure double-gate airlock entry so dogs cannot slip out while you are getting organised. Open 24 hours, but there is no lighting inside the enclosure, so stick to daylight visits. Owners must keep dogs under effective control and pick up after them. Once you step outside the fenced park into the surrounding Lane Cove National Park bushland, dogs must go back on lead.

What's there. A large central artificial turf area for clean, mud-free play, with natural grass at each end. Water stations are on-site, plus basic seating. Wheelchair-accessible entry and parking.

Getting there. On Dawson Avenue, easily reached via The Comenarra Parkway, with free off-street parking right outside the gate. It is a short walk or drive from Thornleigh station.

Nearby with the dogs. Cafes with outdoor seating line Pennant Hills Road in Thornleigh village and neighbouring Pennant Hills. Pet-friendly accommodation is thin on the ground locally, but Hornsby and Wahroonga have options nearby.

Best on a quiet weekday morning or evening. Weekend mornings get crowded fast.
