Thornleigh Dog Park

Thornleigh Dog Park is a fully fenced, 24-hour off-leash park on Dawson Avenue, bordered by Lane Cove National Park bushland on Sydney's upper north shore. The long rectangular layout is its signature: dogs who want to run in straight lines get a proper stretch instead of circling a small yard.

The dog setup

Perimeter fencing is complete, with a secure double-gate airlock entry so dogs cannot slip out while you are getting organised. Inside, a large central artificial turf area keeps play clean and mud-free in wet weather, flanked by natural grass at each end. Water stations are on site along with basic seating, and both entry and parking are wheelchair accessible.

Hornsby Shire Council rules apply: dogs on lead until safely inside the fence and back on lead on the way out, kept in sight and under effective voice control, and cleaned up after. Aggressive dogs must be leashed and leave immediately. Although the park is open around the clock, there is no lighting inside the enclosure, so stick to daylight. Once you step into the surrounding national park bushland, dogs go back on lead.

Max: weekend mornings, especially Saturday and Sunday, are the busiest times here. If your dog needs more space, aim for a weekday evening or a sunny weekday morning instead.

The vibe

The regulars are a friendly, respectful bunch and the park's community feel comes up often among locals. The astro turf surface means it holds up well after rain, which makes it a reliable choice when grass parks around the shire are churned up.

Getting there and parking

The park sits on Dawson Avenue, easily reached via The Comenarra Parkway, with free off-street parking right outside the gate. Thornleigh station is a short walk or drive away for anyone arriving by train.

Close by with the dogs

The Monday Morning Cafe in Thornleigh has a shaded courtyard where dogs are welcome, and the Wahroonga Dog Park makes a solid second option a few suburbs over. If you would rather walk than circle the enclosure, the Burraga Track at West Pennant Hills is an on-lead bushwalk nearby.
