Frances O'Brien Dog Park

Frances O'Brien Dog Park is a small, fully fenced off-leash park on Stuart Street in Wahroonga, set into bushland on the Upper North Shore rather than on an open oval. Dense tree canopy is the defining feature. It stays shaded and cool through summer, and it suits dogs that would rather sniff and explore a pocket of bush than chase a ball across a big field.

The dog setup

The enclosure sits between local walking tracks and residential boundaries, with mature trees over most of the ground and a few benches for owners. That is about all the council provides: there are no water taps, no bag dispensers and no public toilets, so bring your own water, bowl and waste bags. There is no lighting either, so treat it as a daytime park.

Ku-ring-gai Council's off-leash rules apply. Keep your dog under effective control at all times, pick up waste immediately, and lead up whenever you leave the fenced area. Dogs must be lifetime registered and wearing a collar with current ID, and wheeled recreational devices such as bikes and scooters are not allowed inside the fence.

Max: This is tick country. Check your dog over after every visit, stay current on tick prevention, and keep them out of the deep leaf litter when the season peaks.

Worth knowing

The bush surface holds damp after rain and gets muddy in patches, so a towel in the car earns its place in winter. The fencing is functional but not fancy, and a couple of gates face onto walking paths, so if your dog is an escape artist keep an eye on them near the gates rather than assuming the perimeter does the work.

Free on-street parking runs along Stuart Street right outside the park. Wahroonga Station is a moderate walk or a short drive away, and the area is otherwise a residential pocket, so arrivals are mostly by car.

Make a day of it

For a longer outing, the Lovers Jump Creek and Samuel King Loop trail at Turramurra adds a proper bushwalk to the day, and the South Turramurra Dog Oval gives off-leash dogs a more open run if yours prefers grass to leaf litter. Wahroonga Dog Park is the other fenced option in the suburb.
