Taroona Dog park

Taroona Park (Apex Park) is a dedicated off-lead dog exercise area in the southern Hobart suburb of Taroona, bordered by Taroona Crescent, Nubeena Crescent, and Bachelor Way. The defining draw is the dual setup: a large, unfenced grassy parkland backed by a separate, declared off-lead beach section east of the boat ramp.

The rules. Dogs can run off-lead across the main parkland and the designated eastern beach, but several lead restrictions apply. Dogs must be on-lead in the car park, on the foreshore trail, and on the grassed areas around the BBQ, exercise equipment, and public toilets. They are prohibited within 10 metres of the playground. For the beach, the boundary is strict: only the sand east of the boat ramp is off-lead, with no dogs permitted on the rest of the shoreline. All dogs must be under effective control at all times, meaning they respond to commands, remain visible, and do not hinder people or other animals.

What's there. The park offers open, unfenced grass with some natural tree shade. Public toilets and a BBQ area sit within the wider park precinct. Bring your own waste bags, as on-site supply is unreliable.

The water and terrain. The off-lead beach section runs east from the boat ramp and includes big rocks and boulders that require careful footing. Low tide exposes substantially more sand for running, while high tide covers most of the available beach. Time your visit around the tide chart if the beach is your priority.

Getting there. Roughly 15 minutes south of Hobart CBD via the Channel Highway. Street parking is available along Nubeena Crescent, with a designated Taroona Park parking lot adjacent to Taroona Hall. Metro Tasmania services run along the Channel Highway, a short walk from the park entrance.

Watch-outs. The entire park is unfenced, so dogs with unreliable recall need close management. Mind the boulders on the beach, and keep clear of the boat ramp area where the off-lead zone ends.

Nearby with the dogs. Sandy Bay is the closest suburb with dog-friendly cafe listings. Brew and In Good Company both sit roughly 10 minutes north along the Channel Highway.

Weekend mornings and the after-work window (4:30 PM to 6:00 PM) draw the biggest crowds. Aim for a weekday low tide for the most space and the easiest beach access. A solid choice for sociable dogs with dependable recall who can handle an unfenced, multi-use layout.
