Kingston Dog Beach

The lead. Kingston Dog Beach is the off-leash strip at the northern end of Kingston Beach, running from Beach Road towards the Brownell Creek outlet, about twenty minutes south of Hobart. It is one of the region's most popular dog beaches: sandy, sheltered, and famous locally for its "dog library", a community box of tennis balls and toys sitting near the sand.

The rules. Off-leash applies only at the northern end, and dogs need to be under effective control there. Leash back on for the car park, footpaths, and the middle and southern sections of Kingston Beach, which are on-leash or dog-prohibited year-round, along with the adjoining sports grounds. Carry a lead even if you plan to let your dog off it, bag and bin waste straight away, and keep dogs clear of nesting birds and other beach users.

What's there. Waste bag dispensers are provided at the off-leash end. Toilets are a walk away near the southern end of the main beach. There is natural dune shade and a few picnic benches nearby, but no dog wash or bubbler on site, so bring your own water.

The water and terrain. Flat, sandy beach that shelves gently, good for swimming dogs of most confidence levels. The off-leash strip narrows a lot at high tide, so check the Kingston Beach tide times before you go if your dog needs real space to run.

Getting there. About 15-20 minutes south of Hobart CBD via the Southern Outlet (A6), following signs to Kingston Beach. Street parking on Beach Road is free but fills fast on sunny weekends, and there is a small parking area at the northern end closer to the off-leash strip. Metro Tasmania buses run to Kingston Beach, leaving a short walk to the dog section.

Nearby with the dogs. The Salty Dog Hotel on Beach Road has a large, covered beer garden that welcomes dogs, with The Frosty Dog frozen yogurt shop next door for an after-swim treat. Several pet-friendly holiday rentals operate in the Kingston Beach and Bonnet Hill area; confirm pet policy and any fees at booking.

When to go. Weekday mornings are the quiet option. Weekend mornings before 10am are busy but manageable, while sunny summer afternoons get crowded and social, so it suits a well-socialised dog more than a nervous one. Good for confident swimmers and dogs that enjoy company; check the tide first if you want more than a strip of sand to work with.
