The Salty Dog Hotel

The Salty Dog Hotel is a beachside pub at 2 Beach Road, Kingston Beach, directly across from the sand about 20 minutes south of Hobart. The draw for dog owners is the large, partly covered beer garden, a short stroll from the beach, and the name alone tells you where you stand: dogs are welcome in the outdoor beer garden and courtyard, kept on lead, while the indoor restaurant areas stay dog-free.

The dog setup

The garden is spacious, largely undercover and built for relaxed, lingering sessions, so a settled dog on a lead fits right in. Plan to eat outside, since indoor dining is off limits to dogs. It is a busy, social room, so pair the visit with a walk first if your dog is easily wound up by other dogs and kids passing the table.

The vibe

The kitchen runs from breakfast daily with fresh, seasonal pub classics: fish and chips, seafood chowder, pappardelle lamb ragu and an eggplant parmigiana for the vegetarians, plus a wide vegetarian and vegan range. It is family-friendly and one of the go-to live music spots in the Hobart area, with Sunday afternoon sessions in the beer garden the signature.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking runs along Beach Road with a free beachfront car park nearby, and the entrance and toilets are wheelchair accessible. It opens 8am daily (takeaway coffee from 7am), closing around 9pm on weekdays and 10pm on weekends, and it trades on public holidays except Christmas Day.

Pair it with

Walk the Alum Cliffs Track first and finish at the garden, which is the classic local loop. For a proper off-lead run beforehand, the Kingston View Drive Fenced Dog Park is close by.
