Yimbun Park Fenced Dog Park

Yimbun Park is a quiet neighbourhood reserve on Brisbane's southside, about 20 minutes from the CBD, and its fenced dog enclosure gives Sunnybank locals a secure off-leash option without fighting for space. It sits behind the houses off McCullough Street, and most people who use it live within a short walk or a couple of minutes' drive.

The dog setup

The off-leash area is fully fenced, with a double-gate entry so you can unclip once you are through. Inside there is open lawn for running, a few agility obstacles for dogs that like a job, and a water tap. Bags and bins are usually stocked, but it is worth carrying your own spares on weekends when the cart traffic gets busy.

Everywhere outside the fence, the leash goes back on. That includes the walking paths through the wider parkland, the playground edge and the car park. Even inside the enclosure, council rules require your dog to stay under effective control, which means watching rather than scrolling. If your dog gets pushy or overwhelmed, leash up and step out rather than working it out mid-scuffle.

The vibe

This is a local park rather than a destination, and it behaves like one. Sunday mornings and sunny weekend afternoons are the busy windows, with smaller bumps on some weekday evenings. Mid-week mornings are calm enough for nervous dogs and new rescues to settle. If the enclosure fills with big, bouncy regulars, the surrounding parkland is a decent fallback for an on-leash leg stretch, and the DM Henderson Park precinct a short drive away has more room again.

Max: Straightforward spot. Fence all the way round, gate that latches, and the tap saves me carrying water. Keep your dog leashed until you are inside and check who is already in there before letting a big dog off.

Getting there and parking

Turn off McCullough Street into Salix Place and the dog park is at the end, with a small dedicated car park plus street parking on the surrounding residential streets. It is free, and you rarely circle for a spot outside peak weekend hours. Buses run along McCullough Street and it is a short walk from the nearest stop.

There are no public toilets at the park, so plan around that if you are bringing the whole family. The playground and basketball half-court next door keep kids occupied while the dog does laps, and the picnic tables under the trees are handy for a slower morning. A coffee cart often parks up near the car park on weekends.

While you're out there

If Yimbun is your regular and you want to mix it up, the Coopers Plains Dog park is one suburb over, and the Nathan Road Park Fenced Dog Park in Runcorn adds another fenced option within ten minutes. For an on-leash change of scenery, the Toohey Ridge Track winds through bushland just north of Sunnybank. Before a longer outing, grab something at The Feathers cafe in Nathan, which welcomes dogs in the outdoor seating.
