Rob Akers Reserve Dog Park

Rob Akers Reserve Dog Park on Old Gympie Road is Strathpine's dedicated off-leash spot within the larger community reserve, a fully fenced exercise area shaded by mature trees. Separate enclosures for large and small dogs mean nervous newcomers and boisterous regulars do not have to share the same run.

The dog setup

The fenced exercise area is the off-leash zone; keep dogs leashed in the surrounding parts of the reserve. Even inside the fence, City of Moreton Bay expects effective control and supervision the whole time, waste picked up and binned immediately, and dogs comfortable around others before they come off the lead. Water fountains with dog bowls, waste bag dispensers and shaded seating are all on site.

What's there

Mature trees give the enclosures real shade, which makes this a usable midday stop in summer when open parks are baking, and koalas are occasionally spotted in the canopy. The broader reserve adds a playground, skate park and cricket nets, so it doubles as a family outing rather than a pure dog stop. The entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible.

Pepsi: the ground goes muddy and mossy after heavy rain, so give it a day or two to dry out or bring the dog you don't mind washing.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at 40-48 Old Gympie Road, Strathpine, with on-site parking that is limited on busy weekends, so arriving early helps. Buses along Gympie Road put you within walking distance if you are not driving. Toilets are limited at the enclosure itself, so plan around the reserve's main facilities.

When to go

Weekday mid-morning to early afternoon is the quiet window. Weekday early mornings, late afternoons and weekend mornings draw the biggest crowds of locals and their regulars.

Close by with the dogs

Grab a post-park coffee at Quick Bliss Acai and Bagel Bar on Gympie Road, or head to Mugs Cafe at Lawnton, which is known for going out of its way for dogs. If you want a second fenced run in the week, Piggott Reserve fenced dog park at Brendale is close by.
