Stanhope dog park

Stanhope dog park, also known as Reserve 794, sits at the end of Butia Way in Stanhope Gardens, on Sydney's north western fringe. It is a plain, practical spot: two fully fenced paddocks where local dogs can run off-leash around the clock, with none of the polish of the newer Hills District parks but plenty of room to move.

The dog setup

The off-leash area is split into two separate fenced paddocks, which is the main draw. If the big paddock has a boisterous crowd, you can shift to the other side and give a shy dog or a small breed a calmer run. Gates should be closed behind you at both entry and exit, and Blacktown City Council expects dogs inside to stay under effective voice control at all times.

Your dog needs to be microchipped, registered and wearing an ID tag, and council rangers do patrol. Everywhere outside the paddocks, the leash goes back on. Waste bins are provided, but bag dispensers are not reliably stocked, so bring your own. There is no dependable water tap either, so pack a bottle and a bowl, especially through summer.

Worth knowing

Shade is limited and there are no public toilets at the reserve, which makes this a morning or evening park rather than a midday summer one. Early mornings and late afternoons draw the regulars, while weekday mornings and early afternoons tend to be quiet enough for dogs that prefer space. Street parking runs along Butia Way and Yarrandale Street, and buses along Stanhope Parkway leave you a short walk out.

Max: Two paddocks and no tap is the trade here. I bring water for both of us and skip it in the middle of a hot day. Mornings are calm and the regulars are friendly.
