Grant Road Reserve is Somerville's main fully fenced off-leash park, a large open grassy space with mature trees on the eastern edge of town. The draw is simple: secure double-gated fencing and enough room to throw a ball without your dog ever reaching a boundary, which makes it a safe choice for recall-in-progress dogs and nervous newcomers alike.

The rules. Dogs run off-leash inside the fenced area but must stay under effective voice control, and you are expected to supervise at all times. Waste bags and bins are provided, so clean up after your dog. It is one large open enclosure rather than separate zones for big and small dogs, though the Mornington Peninsula Shire has been consulting on future improvements, including possible zoning, so signage may change.

What's there. Secure perimeter fencing with a double-gate entry, dog-friendly drinking fountains, plenty of shade from established trees, and open grass for fetch and general zoomies. The space is big enough that it rarely feels crowded.

Getting there. The park is at 70 Grant Road, with a dedicated off-street car park near the entrance at the eastern end. Somerville Station on the Frankston line is within walking distance if you are coming without a car.

The double gates mean you can let me off before the inner gate opens, so no bolting into the car park. Sort your leash out in the airlock.

Weekday mornings and quieter evenings give you the most space. Weekends bring a good social mix of dogs, but the size of the reserve means it holds a crowd well. Good for big runners and dogs still working on recall.
