Pugs In Mugs is the cafe inside Somerville Central shopping centre at 49 Eramosa Road West, on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula, and the name tells you exactly where its loyalties sit. Dogs get al fresco tables out front and their own menu of treats, which makes this a genuine coffee-run destination for dog owners.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcomed at the outdoor seating along the shopfront, leashed and settled beside your chair. The house speciality is the pugccino, a dog-friendly frothy cup the staff bring out alongside your flat white.

The cafe trades 7am to 2:30pm every day, so it is a breakfast and lunch stop rather than an afternoon one. Weekend mornings are the busiest window with the shopping centre traffic.

The vibe

The food runs beyond standard cafe fare: miso avocado on sourdough, generously filled toasties, arancini, iced matcha and good chai, plus a decent croissant. It is casual and family-friendly, with plenty of kids and dogs in the mix.

Max: order the pugccino even if your dog is not a pug. Pick a table away from the trolley lane, and note the kitchen winds down towards the 2:30pm close.
