Shepparton Fenced Dog Park (Ducat Reserve)

The fenced dog park at Ducat Reserve, 73 Paterson Road, is the quieter of Shepparton's two enclosed off-leash areas, sitting in a residential pocket north of the centre. It is a fully enclosed grassed run, handy when you want secure off-leash space without the weekend crowds that Princess Park draws.

The dog setup

Greater Shepparton City Council's rules for its fenced dog parks are stricter than most, and worth knowing before you arrive. Handlers must be 18 or over and stay inside the fence with their dog at all times. Leash up before entering and on exit, and carry the lead while inside. Dogs must be vaccinated and wear a collar with a current registration tag. Any aggression or mating behaviour means leaving straight away, waste goes in the bins, and smoking, alcohol and fence-climbing are all out.

Inside you get a fully fenced grass area with drinking water for dogs, set in open green space. It is a simpler setup than some metropolitan parks, so bring your own bowl if your dog is fussy about shared troughs.

Max: an 18-plus handler rule is unusual, so don't send the teenagers down with the dog. The gate code of conduct is enforced by signage, not suggestion.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits on Paterson Road in a residential pocket, with street parking alongside the park. It is a few minutes' drive from central Shepparton, and the surrounding streets make a pleasant walk-in for locals.

Worth knowing

Check the entry signs for current conditions each visit, because councils do adjust usage rules. The enclosure's quieter reputation is the draw: weekday visits are often near-empty, and even peak times are tame compared with Princess Park. Outside the fence, council rules require dogs on a lead no more than three metres long across public reserves.

Make a day of it

Shepparton's other enclosed option is Princess Park's fenced dog park, bigger and busier, so the two work as a rotation. For a post-run feed, Stanleys Cafe and Restaurant and Mr Edwin's Cafe both do outdoor tables, and The Terminus Hotel is the town's dog-friendly pub option.
