Mr. Edwin’s Cafe

Mr. Edwin's Cafe runs out of 44 Fryers Street in the middle of the Shepparton CBD, and it stands out from the strip for more than the coffee: the kitchen cooks a fusion of Australian cafe classics and Filipino breakfast favourites, so a longanisa-and-garlic-rice plate sits on the same menu as eggs benedict. Footpath tables out the front make it a workable dog stop on a CBD walk, and the kitchen turns over breakfast and lunch from 7am to 4pm (closed Tuesdays).

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor footpath seating, not inside, which is the standard arrangement for the central Shepparton strip. There is no dedicated dog menu here, so carry a portable water bowl rather than counting on one being put down for you. Weekend mornings fill up quickly, so if you want a kerbside table with a dog in tow, arrive early or phone ahead.

The food

Reviews single out the matcha and coffee, the avocado toast, and the cakes, but the Filipino side of the menu is the real point of difference: housemade longanisa and pork tocino served with garlic rice and eggs, plus lunch plates like crispy pata on the specials list. Service gets repeated praise for being genuinely friendly, which helps when you are managing a dog at a footpath table.

The cafe is at 44 Fryers Street, a short walk from the Maude Street mall end of the CBD. Street parking runs along Fryers and the surrounding streets, mostly with signed time limits, so check the signage before settling in for a long breakfast.

Nearby with the dogs

Greater Shepparton City Council runs two fully fenced off-leash dog parks: the Princess Park Fenced Dog Park with separate large and small dog enclosures and agility gear, and the fenced section of Ducat Reserve on Paterson Road. Council rules require a leash of up to three metres until you are inside the double-gated enclosure. Closer to town, Victoria Park Lake gives you an on-leash leg-stretch around the water before breakfast.
