Heathcote Dog Park

Heathcote Dog Park is a fully fenced off-leash reserve on Herriot Street, about 500 metres from the town centre, with separate sections for large and small dogs and a water trough that gets serious use in summer.

The rules. Dogs need to be under effective voice control even though the park is fenced, and it's worth carrying a leash for the walk in and out. Stick to the large or small dog side that matches your dog for calmer play. Waste bags are sometimes stocked at the gate but bring your own as backup, and clean up straight away.

What's there. Open grass with a walking path, a few small hills, some shade, agility tunnels, benches for owners, a water fountain and a concrete trough, and a secure double-gated entry. The park is wheelchair accessible. Shelter from sun or rain is limited, so a hot or wet day changes the experience.

Getting there. The park sits on Herriot Street off High Street, with easy parking nearby. It backs onto the O'Keefe Rail Trail, so it works well as a stop for anyone walking or cycling that route between Heathcote and Bendigo. Note the off-leash area is fenced, but the adjoining rail trail itself is on-leash.

Nearby with the dogs. High Street's pubs and cafes generally have outdoor seating that works for dogs, and Heathcote Queen Meadow Caravan Park and Heathcote Retreat Motel both take dogs if you're staying over.

Mornings and late afternoons draw the most regulars, so aim for the middle of the day if you want the park to yourself. Pack a towel if it's been raining, the trough and the low ground both stay wet for a while afterwards.
