Jock Kennedy Recreation Reserve is a waterfront park on Russell Island with a boat ramp, shaded picnic areas and a seasonal off-leash schedule that swings between fully off-leash and on-leash only depending on the time of year, so check the calendar before you go.

The rules. Off-leash access follows Redland City Council's seasonal shared-hours schedule: any time from May to August, 5pm to 9am during January, February, November and December, and on-leash only during March, April, September and October. Off-leash activity is restricted to the marked boundary areas, and owners must keep effective control of their dog at all times. Fines of up to 20 penalty units apply for breaches, and you must pick up after your dog.

What's there. Shaded picnic areas, electric barbecues, public toilets and a boat ramp with waterfront views. There is no dedicated pet water station on record, so bring your own bowl.

Getting there. The reserve is on Jackson Road, Russell Island, with parking on site. From the mainland, the TransLink passenger ferry runs from Redland Bay to Russell Island; you will need a car or local taxi from the terminal to reach the reserve.

Nearby with the dogs. Cafe Memory Lane on High Street welcomes dogs at its outdoor tables and is a short drive away. The Happy Room Cafe on Canaipa Road also has dog-friendly outdoor seating.

Check which seasonal window you are in before letting your dog off lead here, the boundary and hours change through the year and the fines are real.

Weekday mornings are quietest, especially outside the May to August off-leash season when the park draws fewer dog walkers. Good for a waterfront walk paired with a coffee run into town.
