Knaith Road Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Knaith Road Reserve is an open, unfenced grass reserve tucked behind the Ringwood East village shops, and it works as an off-leash space in the old-school sense: a flat green run for fetch and recall games rather than a fenced dog park. Maroondah City Council designates it off-leash across the open grass, and its position a five to ten minute walk from Ringwood East station makes it one of the easier car-free dog outings in Melbourne's east.

The dog setup

There is no fencing here, so the setup is open lawn bounded by streets, a kindergarten and the shops behind. Big shade trees dot the reserve, a picnic area with tables sits alongside, and dog waste bins are provided. The playground near the car park is the one boundary to watch: council rules require dogs on-lead within 15 metres of playgrounds and BBQ or picnic facilities, on shared pathways, and during organised sport or training.

Because it's unfenced and partially bounded by roads, effective voice control is the real entry requirement. Carry a leash at all times, pick up after your dog, and treat the off-leash zone as conditional on your dog actually coming back when called.

Worth knowing

Max: unfenced means recall matters more than anything else here. If your dog is unreliable off-lead near roads, the fenced parks at Croydon or Heathmont are a safer call.

Weekday evenings and early mornings are the busiest stretches as locals walk dogs around work hours, with weekend mornings moderately busy. Weekday afternoons are the quiet window if your dog needs space or gets distracted easily. The reserve itself is accessible around the clock, and being small and flat it suits short, high-energy fetch sessions more than long walks.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Knaith Road or Laurence Grove, with a small parking area off Laurence Grove that fills quickly at peak times. Ringwood East station on the Lilydale line is the nearest rail stop, and the walk from the platform takes five to ten minutes through the village.

Close by with the dogs

The Ringwood East village shops on Railway Avenue are directly behind the reserve, with cafes offering takeaway coffee and some outdoor seating.
