What visitors mention
The Redhead Dog Exercise Area is a large, open grassy park set back from the coast, giving local dogs a place to run off-leash on turf rather than sand. It is open 24/7, and it is a separate spot from the Redhead Beach off-leash area, so pick the one that suits your dog on the day.
The rules. Dogs may be off-leash but must stay under effective control. This grassy exercise area is distinct from the beach: on the sand, off-leash applies only south of Second Creek, dogs are banned between First and Second Creek, and dune and dune-rehabilitation zones are off-limits everywhere. Carry your own waste bags and take the waste with you, as bins are not reliably provided.
What's there. The draw is space: a large, largely open field with some seating for owners and wheelchair-accessible areas. It is not fully fenced, so recall matters near the edges. There are no dedicated water fountains or bag dispensers on-site, so bring water, a bowl and your own bags.
Getting there. The park is on Elsdon Street with street parking available, and it is an easy walk from the surrounding Redhead streets. Local buses service the Redhead area if you are coming without a car.
Nearby with the dogs. Surge Espresso & Co and Redhead Industrial Takeaway and Cafe both take leashed dogs at their outdoor tables for a coffee afterwards. The Redhead Beach off-leash sand south of Second Creek is a short hop away if your dog wants a swim to finish.
The park is busiest with locals on weekends and most active in the late afternoon, roughly 4 to 6pm. In summer, early mornings and late afternoons are kindest on paws and coats. Good for social dogs who want a run on grass rather than surf.
