Redhead Dog Beach (Cain Street Entrance)

The dog beach at Redhead, south of Newcastle, is a roughly 700-metre run of open coast that is off-leash around the clock south of Second Creek, with the Cain Street car park dropping you almost onto the sand. At low tide it opens into a wide apron of firm sand made for proper running and ocean swims.

The rules

Off-leash applies only to the beach south of Second Creek, 24 hours a day. Dogs are banned from the main patrolled beach to the north and from the stretch between First and Second Creek, and the lead stays on through the dunes and Cain Street Reserve until you are past the boundary. Lake Macquarie City Council rangers patrol and fines apply, so find Second Creek before you unclip.

Max: the creek line is the whole game here. I walk the lead on until I am clearly south of Second Creek, because the no-dogs zone starts immediately on the wrong side of it and rangers do come through.

The water

This is open surf rather than a sheltered bay, so read the swell before a keen swimmer goes in and stick to the shallows when it is up. Low tide is the time to come: a broad, hard-packed running strip and easier water. At high tide the surf pushes up to the dunes and the usable sand shrinks right back.

What's there

The sealed Cain Street car park sits right by the beach track, with public toilets, showers and picnic spots near the main reserve and a kiosk handling coffee and snacks. There is no freshwater tap on the beach itself, so carry your own water and a bowl.

Getting there

From Newcastle it is about a 15 to 20 minute drive via Kahibah and Redhead Road or Kalaroo Road, with Cain Street turning off the local streets. The car park is large but fills fast on sunny weekend mornings and public holidays, so arrive before 8:30am. Bus route 48 runs from Newcastle and Charlestown, leaving a 10 to 15 minute walk down to the sand.

Watch-outs

Check the creek crossings after rain and keep dogs out of the dune fencing and vegetation. If yours is nervous around big dogs, note the 24-hour off-leash status means the regular crowd can arrive at any hour.

When to go

Low tide on a weekday morning gives the most room and the fewest dogs. Big runners and confident swimmers get the most from it; small or nervous dogs do better on a calm, low-tide day.
