Windale Dog Exercise Area

Owners must carry a leash at all times, keep dogs under effective control, and bin all waste. Dogs are kept clear of the playground, skate park and basketball court in one corner of the reserve, and off any sports fields where signage indicates.

The space itself is a large, well-maintained grassy expanse with water stations for dogs and humans, two toilet blocks, and ample parking nearby.

Max: the ground here stays soft long after the rain has stopped. Check the forecast and give it a day to dry, or you will be washing mud off your dog before you get back in the car.

Terrain and when to go

Mostly flat grass backing onto a bushland reserve walk that adds varied terrain. The ground holds water readily and turns muddy after heavy rain. Early in the sunrise-to-10am window is the quietest time; the space fills as the morning progresses before off-leash hours close at 10am sharp.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along Merrigum Street in a residential area, and nearby bus stops sit on Pacific Highway and within Windale itself. The reserve is close to the Fernleigh Track corridor if you want to combine the visit with a longer walk or ride.

Close by with the dogs

For a coffee run, Lucas Bakery & Cafe in Gateshead is the closest stop. If Windale is crowded or you miss the morning window, Redhead Dog Exercise Area is the alternative off-leash park nearby, and Croudace Bay Dog Park sits further along the lake. The Fernleigh Track makes the best on-lead long walk in the area.
