Windale Dog Exercise Area sits within Bahloo Reserve on Merrigum Street, Windale. The defining detail is the off-leash window: Lake Macquarie City Council permits off-leash access only from sunrise to 10am on weekdays, which is a narrow and unusual schedule that shapes every visit.

The rules. Off-leash hours run sunrise to 10am on weekdays only. Outside those hours, dogs must remain on-leash throughout the reserve. Owners must carry a leash at all times, keep dogs under effective control, and pick up and bin all waste. Dogs are prohibited from playgrounds and sports fields where signage indicates.

What's there. A large, well-maintained grassy space with water stations for both dogs and humans, two toilet blocks, and ample nearby parking. One corner of the reserve contains a playground, skate park, and basketball court. Keep dogs clear of those recreation zones.

Terrain and mud. Mostly flat grass backing onto a bushland reserve walk that adds varied terrain. The ground holds water readily and turns muddy after heavy rain.

The ground here stays soft long after rain has stopped. Check the forecast and give it a day to dry, or you will be washing mud off your dog before you get back in the car.

Getting there. Street parking is available along Merrigum Street in a residential area. Nearby bus stops sit on Pacific Highway or within Windale; check Transport for NSW for current routes and timetables.

Nearby with the dogs. For a coffee run, Lucas Bakery & Cafe in Gateshead and Surge Espresso & Co in Redhead are both local options. If Windale is crowded, Redhead Dog Exercise Area is an alternative off-leash park in a neighbouring suburb.

For off-leash exercise, weekday mornings before 10am are the only window that counts. If you prefer a calmer on-leash walk, aim for weekday mornings just after 10am or early weekends when the crowds thin out. Whatever time you choose, avoid visiting during or straight after heavy rain as the reserve retains water and the surface gets properly boggy.
