Gateshead Dog Exercise Area

Gateshead Dog Exercise Area is an unfenced sports oval on the corner of Goundry Street and Willow Road at Gateshead, just off the Pacific Highway south of Charlestown. There are no facilities worth writing home about. The reason to come is the off-leash window: weekday mornings from sunrise to 10am, when this quiet field becomes a pre-work run for local dogs.

Leash status

Off-leash is permitted on weekdays only, from sunrise until 10am, per Lake Macquarie City Council's dog exercise rules. Outside that window the oval is on-lead, and dogs must also go back on lead whenever organised sport, training or matches are using the fields. Dogs need to be under effective voice control at all times, microchipped and registered as NSW law requires, and any dog showing aggression must be leashed and removed immediately. Council fines for an off-lead dog outside the permitted hours run to $330, so do not assume the field is leash-free on weekends. It is not.

Max: unfenced means unfenced, right up to the road. Bring a reliable recall dog and treat sunrise to 10am as a hard deadline, not a guideline. At 10:01 you are the person being fined.

Water and terrain

The surface is a flat sports oval, open and exposed, which gets hot in summer sun and muddy after rain. There is no water tap, no shade, no seating and no toilets, so bring your own bags, water and a bowl. Waste bins are provided. In summer the early start is a feature rather than a chore: sunrise is the coolest hour the field will ever be.

Getting there and parking

The oval sits just off the Pacific Highway (A1), reached via the Charlestown or Warners Bay exits following signs to Gateshead. Free unrestricted street parking runs along both Goundry Street and Willow Road, and bus stops on the Pacific Highway near Goundry Street are the nearest public transport, a short walk in.

Close by with the dogs

The Charlestown Dog Exercise Area is the closest alternative if you miss the morning window. Lucas Bakery and Cafe is the local Gateshead stop, and if you need a night nearby, Tantarra Bed and Breakfast at Warners Bay is worth a call about their pet terms.
