Fairfield Showground Fenced Dog Park

Fairfield Showground Fenced Dog Park sits at 443 Smithfield Road, Prairiewood, inside the Fairfield Showground precinct. It is Fairfield City's largest dedicated off-leash facility, and the reason to make the trip is the layout: three separate fully fenced zones split by dog size, with double-gated entries at each.

The dog setup

The park divides into small, medium and large dog enclosures, so a cavoodle and a mastiff do not have to share the same ground. Each zone is ringed by high-security fencing and entered through a double-gated airlock, which buys you time to close the first gate before opening the second. Sections of the facility are occasionally set aside for canine or agility training, so it is worth a quick look at the signage on arrival.

Off-leash time is strictly limited to the fenced zones. Everywhere else in the showground your dog must stay on a leash, and you need to carry a visible lead even while your dog runs. Council rules require you to stay inside the enclosure, keep your dog under effective voice control, and remove any animal showing aggression immediately. Dogs declared dangerous, menacing or of a restricted breed are barred. Bins are on site for waste, and there is no excuse for leaving a pile behind.

Max: three gates deep before my human trusts me off the lead, but the large yard is worth the paperwork.

Worth knowing

Water bubblers and bowls are provided for dogs and people, with benches and shade structures around the enclosures. Lighting is installed, so evening visits after work are workable year round. The grass surface is open and generous, which suits high-energy dogs who need genuine running room rather than a pocket-handkerchief pen.

Getting there and parking

Drive into the showground complex from Smithfield Road and follow signs to the rear-area parking. Off-street parking is free and usually easy, except when the Fairfield Markets or a major community event is running on a Saturday, when the precinct fills up fast. Buses along Smithfield Road drop you nearby, but expect a walk through the grounds to reach the enclosures.

Close by with the dogs

If the showground is busy with an event, Bamford Close Fenced Dog Park in Smithfield is the smaller fallback a few minutes away. For a coffee afterwards, Oliver Brown in Wetherill Park and Hoppa and Joe in Fairfield both keep outdoor seats where a leashed dog is welcome.
