Esslemont Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Esslemont Reserve is an off-leash oval on Cornwall Road in Pascoe Vale, run by Merri-bek City Council, with direct access to the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail. The whole reserve is designated off-leash, which makes it a flexible spot for a run plus a longer walk.

The rules. Dogs must be under voice or hand control at all times when off-leash, and you must carry a lead. On-lead within 15 metres of organised sport while it is in progress. Dogs must not rush at or threaten people or other animals. Remove waste immediately and bin it, as bags are not supplied.

What's there. A large open oval, benches around the park, and a water tap with a dog bowl usually near the playground in the southeast corner. There are cricket nets, a basketball hoop and an outdoor gym, so mind where you throw a ball when others are using them.

Getting there. Street parking runs along Cornwall Road. Pascoe Vale Station is a 10 to 15 minute walk, with buses along Cumberland Road and Gaffney Street. The Moonee Ponds Creek Trail gives direct walking and cycling access.

When to go. Busiest on weekday mornings, late afternoons and weekends. Mid-morning and early weekday afternoons are quieter. For a reactive dog, use the perimeter path or come early for maximum space.
