North Lambton Dog Off-Leash Area

The North Lambton Dog Off-Leash Area at 92 Alnwick Road is the fully fenced hilltop facility that became Newcastle's first dedicated fenced dog park, and it is still one of the city's best-equipped. The reserve sits high enough to catch a breeze and takes in views across the suburbs, with two separately fenced play areas split by dog size, double-gated airlock entries and water on tap.

The dog setup

Two fenced zones separate the big, active dogs from the smaller or quieter ones, each entered through double gates. Two water bubblers, shade trees, undercover shelters, picnic tables and bench seating sit inside the boundary, with waste bag dispensers and bins at hand. Off-leash applies within the fenced areas during standard City of Newcastle leash-free hours (sunrise to sunset), with dogs on lead in the parking area and on the surrounding footpaths. Council rules require supervision and effective control at all times, and dangerous or restricted dogs are barred from leash-free areas outright.

Worth knowing

The hilltop layout means dogs can build real speed down the slopes, so recall should be tested before the lead comes off, and shade across parts of the park is patchy; the exposed sections heat up quickly, so aim for the cooler ends of the day in summer and carry water even though taps are on site. The fencing is generous but not a licence to switch off, particularly at gate transitions when several dogs arrive together.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along Alnwick Road near the entrance and fills during peak periods. Bus routes service North Lambton with a short walk to the gate. Weekday mid-mornings and early evenings after work are the busiest stretches; the middle of the day is quieter.
