Purdue Park

Purdue Park is a small leash-free reserve tucked into the residential streets off Purdue Street in Mayfield. It is a quiet local green space, listed by City of Newcastle as a leash-free area, and best suited to calm, social dogs with reliable recall rather than big-runner off-leash play.

The rules. The park is a designated City of Newcastle leash-free area, with off-leash use permitted from sunrise to sunset. It is only partly enclosed. Residential fences back onto much of it, but one side opens toward a concrete drainage channel and creek, so it is not a fully fenced dog park. Dogs must be under effective control at all times, and you are expected to pick up after them.

The terrain. It is a compact grassy pocket with a large shade tree in the middle, which is the main relief on hot days. There is not a lot of room to build up a sprint, which suits a relaxed sniff-and-mingle rather than a serious runaround.

What is there. Amenities are minimal to none. Bring your own water, bowl and waste bags. On-street parking is easy on the quiet surrounding streets.

Watch-outs. The open side toward the drainage channel is the thing to mind. If your dog has patchy recall or is likely to bolt, keep to the fenced side or use a long line. It is not the spot for a dog that does not come when called.

Getting there. From the Maitland Road shopping strip, turn onto Ingall Street then Purdue Street. Buses run along Maitland Road within walking distance, and it is an easy stroll for local residents.

Nearby with the dogs. Onyx Espresso Bar on Maitland Road has a dog-friendly courtyard for coffee after a walk, and The Pocket Mayfield and Mayfield Corner Cafe are both nearby footpath options.

When to go. Weekdays are generally quiet. Locals bring their dogs in the late afternoon, roughly 4 to 6pm, and on weekend mornings, so go outside those windows if you want the space to yourselves. Good for calm, sociable dogs with solid recall.
